It seems we say this every year, but 2017 was another bumper year for the CPN. We've continued to grow in size, now with over 650 members. This year alone we've added 185 new members from 41 countries, thanks, in part, to the work we did at WCPT in Cape Town. The Focused Symposium that we ran was a huge success, and it's fair to say we were all a little surprised by the reception we received. Our one-day post-conference 'Salons' held simultaneously in Cape Town and Cardiff were also great opportunities to grow and support the CPN family. Perhaps the biggest achievement of the year, however, has been the creation of the first ever published collection of critical physiotherapy … [Read more...] about CPN End of Year Report Card
Reflections on a tweet/Why I joined the CPN
CPN member Blaise Doran responded our call-out to members to write a short statement about why or how they have found their way to a CPN so we could use them as testimonials. However his response was so interesting (and too long for a testimonial) we thought it would work better in a blog post. Blaise Doran BSc (Physio.), GradDip (Neuro. Rehab.), MSc (Pain Mgt.) originally trained and worked in the UK. He is a physiotherapist and the coordinator for the Children’s Pain Management Clinic at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Previously he worked predominantly in adult neurological rehabilitation. Prior to undertaking his physiotherapy degree, he worked for ten years as … [Read more...] about Reflections on a tweet/Why I joined the CPN

Review of Barbara Gibson’s book ‘Rehabilitation: a post-critical approach’
There are a lot of physiotherapy books in print, but not many of them engage in the kinds of (post)critical thinking celebrated by the CPN. One exception is Barbara Gibson's superb Rehabilitation: a post-critical approach, published last year by Taylor and Francis. Earlier this week a new review of the book came out in the eminent journal Disability & Society. The review highlights the many radical and important features of the book, and celebrates Barbara's ability to 'extend[s] these discussions and bring[s] a critical eye to bear on concepts that remain under-theorised within the field'. There is a link to the review in the title of the journal above, but if you'd prefer, … [Read more...] about Review of Barbara Gibson’s book ‘Rehabilitation: a post-critical approach’
New book – A Sociological Approach to Acquired Brain Injury and Identity
This new book comes from CPN member Dr Jonathan Harvey. Jonathan is a brain injury survivor and a social scientist who specialises in neurological rehabilitation. Jonathan recently completed a PhD at the Open University (2015), entitled ‘Navigating the complexities of acquired brain injury: theorising everyday activities in identity (re)construction’. Inspired by the author’s own personal experience of sustaining acquired brain injury (ABI), this path-breaking book explores the (re)construction of identity after ABI. It offers a way of understanding ABI through a social scientific lens, promoting an understanding that is generated through close engagement with the lives and experiences … [Read more...] about New book – A Sociological Approach to Acquired Brain Injury and Identity
Critical Studies in Physiotherapy
2017 looks like being another busy and exciting year for the CPN. As well as our first CPN Salon (mini-conference), being held at the lovely Cape Town restaurant Ottimo Cibo on the day after the WCPT conference, we will be launching our first collaboratively written book. We're currently working on possible titles, with our favourite being Mobilising physiotherapy: A critical physiotherapy reader, but the final decision will be made soon. We already have full drafts of all 15 chapters, and the editorial team (Barbara Gibson, Dave Nicholls, Jenny Setchell and Karen Synne Groven) are working through their recommendations and edits. We have chapters that look critically at physiotherapy … [Read more...] about Critical Studies in Physiotherapy
