19:40:52 From Tobba : Anette has her mike on 19:48:16 From David Nicholls : “The biggest thing about majorities is not that they cannot see minorities, it’s that they can’t see themselves” (NZ poet and GP Glenn Colquohoun) 19:49:42 From Tobba : Poignant quote 20:03:20 From David Nicholls : Symbols of PT power…love that. 20:05:25 From vivianasilva : Is there any evidence of the pressure of those companies that produce those electrotherapy products in India? 20:05:51 From vivianasilva : Thank you Hazel!! 20:06:06 From Tobba : Thank you Hazel! 20:07:15 From bhanuramaswamy : Thanks Hazel. It is really interesting at this time when we are being asked to increase teaching commitments abroad e.g. middle east etc, where the culture of learning and practice is so different. The physiotherapists seem willing to learn, but the expectation of the client of physiotherapy is so engrained as well 20:08:48 From Kirstin : culture is dynamic though, isn’t it? 20:10:35 From David Nicholls : "Nothing comes to us valued free” 20:13:09 From Tobba : Is electrotherapy our scissors? 20:17:00 From Tobba : Thank you again Hazel, I find the interaction between materiality, context and practice very interesting. What constitutes a legitimate physiotherapy practice depends on which artefacts, things, props or practices that are recognised as such - and el-therapy might be the “scissor” that makes it possible to do some good through touch, dialogue or movement. 20:18:32 From bhanuramaswamy : I like that - ‘negotiate the gap’. 20:20:36 From jmankelow : Thank you very much for your fascinating presentation Hazel. I’m afraid I have to go. A lot of food for thought that is hard to articulate at this early hour with reference to treatment methods, the absence of evidence to advocate one treatment method over another, cultural differences in physiotherapy within the UK, arggh, what a fantastic environment supported by CPN. Thank you. 20:21:26 From Tobba : Good Q Dave. Its getting harder and harder to define physiotherapy across contexts and people and place and so forth 20:22:53 From Kirstin : I still find it interesting the the patient’s needs and wants still seem to be marginalised… The physios still tell the patient what they need. 20:23:10 From Tobba : Agree Kristin! 20:24:23 From Annette Probst : Agree Kristin! 20:25:13 From Tobba : We forget to ask “what matters to you?” 20:26:24 From kat : may be a bit of Levinas´ ethics could serve pt-patient encounter 20:26:28 From David Nicholls : Love that 20:27:40 From Tobba : I recommend Arthur Frank’s book The renewal of generosity. He calls for hospitality and generosity 20:30:43 From bhanuramaswamy : In response to Kirstin’s input, my doctorate stared to look at ‘exercise classes’ we started for people with Parkinson’s, but gradually emerged into emancipatory research as the group gained confidence. We ended up looking at how they (people affected by Parkinson’s) would reconceptualise how we (health professionals) should speak to them in terms of positivity and wellness - to share management, and not expect them to ‘self-manage’. Getting this message across to the physiotherapy community in practice is difficult although people embrace the idea at an individual level. It is back to our culture/ health setting of telling people what they should know about Parkinson’s, its degenerative nature and how to manage the physical needs. The time to build relationships into the longer term is no longer something we can do due to service cuts. 20:35:04 From Kirstin : Very interesting, thank you Bhanurama. I like that ‘sharing management’. Working with. Referring back to last months talk: sometimes people need self management, sometimes they need to be carried. Meeting the need? 20:38:10 From Annette Probst : Thank you very much Hazel. My workday starts now and I have to leave. Thank you all for this CPN opportunity! 20:38:16 From Tobba : Both therapists and patients need to feel safe and supported. We can offer safety and support to patients by legitimating our presences in diffenret ways, but what makes us safe enough to be present and creative and open to discover what we are actually doing? Maybe we do something we have not yet articulated? 20:38:22 From David Nicholls : Thanks Annette 20:38:44 From bhanuramaswamy : When I first trained in the Bobath technique, and in the years of more prescriptive intervention, one of the tutors used to say: ‘You won’t be able to do this, as you are not yet skilled enough’. The scary thing is that we used to watch her as if she was performing magic!! Listening to you hazel, and your response to my outburst, I am glad there is positivity out there. I think I a just grumpy! 20:40:31 From Tobba : Hi had the same Bobath training as you Bhanurama, but now I find my Bobath tools very useful, particularly because I’m using them in a different manner than I’ve learned. Then its much more fun! 20:41:02 From Tobba : *sorry for typos, there’s an autocorrection here twisting my words and language :( 20:43:03 From vivianasilva : I found interesting that concept “legitimation”. The patient value our services according to their own values (cultural embedded). In South America, we had all the pressure from Unite states (their guidelines-management). Some patients in Colombia, think that more technology you have more legitime is your treatment. In other hand, as culture mixed with indigenous. We value the Shaman (indigenous knowledge) approach. There are many services outside the health system using plants to access altered states of conciusness. Is difficult to manage those different values in the patient encounter. 20:43:14 From kat : thank you for the presentation and discussion, would love to participate in more of it, thanks. 20:43:47 From vivianasilva : Thank you Hazel. I have learnt some interesting concepts. 20:43:49 From Tobba : Thank your very much Hazel. Nice to meet all of you. 20:44:18 From Vidya Lawton : Many thanks for a very thought provoking conference. I look forward to participating in more! 20:45:10 From Kirstin : Thank you Hazel. I love learning to look at our ‘normal’ world in a different way. 20:46:06 From bhanuramaswamy : Thanks for setting this up Dave; such a good idea and sorry I missed the first trial! I look forward to next year’s course. Finally Happy Birthday to Hazel for the weekend…. 20:46:49 From Tobba : Happy Birthday to Hazel (soon)!! 20:47:18 From vivianasilva : Feliz cumple Hazel!!
